Hydrangea serrata

These hydrangeas are almost just as colourful as the Hydrangea macrophylla types. All sorts of pink tints are available although some can be violet-blue. White varieties are also available. The difference between them and the Hydrangea macrophylla group is that the Hydrangea serrata generally produce more but smaller branches and inflorescences, although the flowers are smaller and less eye-catching than those of H. macrophylla types.

For the most part, they can also bear a late spring frost and strong sunlight better. Some varieties will get a reddish to purplish shade on the leaves in summer and autumn. Height 1 – 1˝ metres. Most H. serrata varieties are lacecaps (Teller).
Common varieties are: Hydrangea serrata ’Preciosa’ (mophead), H. s. ’Blue Deckle’ and H. s. ’Beni-gaku’.
